  Assignment 1
  Vocabulary

  • Study the vocabulary list on pages 79-80 (sections 10.1.1, 10.1.2, and 10.1.3) of your text book. (In the 1986 edition, see page 55.)

  • Add the following verbs to your vocabulary

συμβάλλω confer, consider [from συν + βάλλω. When combined with a verb that begins with β, μ, π, or φ, συν routinely becomes συμ.]
συνέβαλλον Imperfect Active Indicative of συμβάλλω [Notice that when the augment is added in a secondary tense, the prepositional prefix συν does not change to συμ.]

  • Add the following adjective to your vocabulary

ἁμαρτωλός, ον sinful [what would this mean when used as a substantive?]

  • Add the following nouns to your vocabulary

    κόκκος, ου, ὁ seed, grain
συκαμορέα, ας, ἡ fig mulberry tree, sycamore fig
συκάμινος, ου, ἡ mulberry tree, [it is possible that Luke used this term for the sycamore tree]

      Chapter Quiz

After you have received your corrected homework, take the following quiz. Your answers will be scored and the result will be e-mailed to you with explanations where you have incorrect answers.

    SECTION A-- Secondary Tenses

    1. The Secondary Tenses

      A. have to do with past time in the indicative mood.
      B. are used infrequently.
      C. only occur in subordinate clauses.

    2. The Secondary Tenses are:

      A. the 2nd perfect, the 2nd pluperfect, and the 2nd aorist tenses.
      B. the imperfect, aorist, and pluperfect tenses.
      C. the perfect, imperfect, and pluperfect tenses.

    3. The sign of the secondary tense is

      A. a variable vowel, also known as a connecting vowel.
      B. an augmented stem..

    4. The augment will never take the form of

      A. a lengthened initial vowel.
      B. ε prefixed before an initial consonant.
      C. σ prefixed before an initial consonant.

    5. Because it occurs only in the indicative mood, the augment can be associated with

      A. conditions contrary to fact.
      B. true statements rather than false statements.
      C. past time.

    6. Secondary tenses only have an augment

      A. in the indicative mood.
      B. when the stem has an initial vowel.
      C. when the stem has an initial consonant.

SECTION B -- Imperfect Active Indicative Verbs

    1. The clues that help us recognize ἔλεγον as an Imperfect Active Indicative form of λέγω include all but which one of the following:

      A. The ο has been shortened from ω.
      B. The stem, λέγ-, is the same 1st principle part stem we see in the present tense.
      C. The ε is an augment, indicating that this is a secondary tense, indicative mood verb.
      D. Two of the six imp. act. ind. forms have the personal ending ν connected to a verb stem by the variable vowel ο.

    2. ἔλεγον could mean any except which one of the following:

      A. I was saying
      B. We were saying
      C. They were saying

SECTION C -- Augmentation of Compound Verbs

    1. Which of the following is the Imperfect Active Indicative, 3rd person plural of συμβάλλω (συν + βάλλω)?

      A. ἐσύμβαλλον
      B. ἠσύμβαλλον
      C. συνέβαλλον
      D. συνήβαλλον

    2. Which of the following is the Imperfect Active Indicative, 3rd person plural of ὑπάγω (ὑπο + ἄγω)?

      A. εὑπάγον
      B. ὑπῆγον
      C. ὕπαγον
      D. ἥπαγον

    3. In ὑπῆρχον (from ὑπάρχω, ὑπο + ἄρχω), there is a circumflex over the penult because

      A. a long penult must always have a circumflex
      B. the accent does not precede the augment in a compound verb, and in this particular verb, the long penult and short ultima require a circumflex if the penult is accented.
      C. A circumflex accent mark is used to indicate that a preposition has lost its final vowel in a compound verb.

SECTION D -- Condition Contrary to Fact

    1. εἰ αὐτοὶ ἦσαν δίκαιοι, τοὺς λόγους αὐτῶν ἂν ἤκουον οἱ ἁμαρτωλοί.

      A. In this sentence,
αὐτοί is in the attributive position and means "same".
      B. In this sentence,
αὐτοί is nominative and intensifies the subject of the verb.

    2. εἰ αὐτοὶ ἦσαν δίκαιοι, τοὺς λόγους αὐτῶν ἂν ἤκουον οἱ ἁμαρτωλοί.

      A.
ἤκουον is a masculine accusative singular noun of the 2nd declension.
      B.
ἤκουον is a neuter singular noun of the 2nd declension, and may be either nominative or accusative.
      C.
ἤκουον is an imperfect active indicative verb.

    3. εἰ αὐτοὶ ἦσαν δίκαιοι, τοὺς λόγους αὐτῶν ἂν ἤκουον οἱ ἁμαρτωλοί.

      A.
οἱ ἁμαρτωλοί modifies the noun ἤκουον.
      B. There is no explicit noun modified by
οἱ ἁμαρτωλοί, and therefore ἁμαρτωλοί should be translated as a substantive.

    4. εἰ αὐτοὶ ἦσαν δίκαιοι, τοὺς λόγους αὐτῶν ἂν ἤκουον οἱ ἁμαρτωλοί.

      A. The nominative
οἱ ἁμαρτωλοί must be the subject in the apodosis, and because it is plural, the verb in the apodosis must be translated as a 3rd person plural.
      B. The verb in the apodosis must be translated as a 1st person singular because it ends in
      -ον.

    5. Choose the BEST English translation of this sentence: εἰ αὐτοὶ ἦσαν δίκαιοι, τοὺς λόγους αὐτῶν ἂν ἤκουον οἱ ἁμαρτωλοί.

      A. If they were righteous, their words would have led the sinners.
      B. If they themselves were righteous, the sinners would have heard their words.
      C. If they themselves were righteous, the sinners would hear their words.
      D. If the same righteous ones were there, they would lead the sinners with their words.
